There were plenty of purple-painted pinky nails at Hamilton Township’s Octoberfest on October 18 as Rotary Club members decorated the fingernails to build awareness of Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio. Even Emma the giant kindly witch stopped over to the Rotary table to get the special nail painting from Rotarian Nikki Graham, who organized Rotary’s appearance. Why the purple pinky? In many countries, when a child receives the polio vaccine, their pinky finger is marked with purple ink, helping health workers identify who has received the vaccine and ensures that no child is missed. October 24 was World Polio Day. |
